The legal community mourns the passing of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female justice of the U.S Supreme Court, who died on December 1. Her body was brought back to the Supreme Court on Monday for a day of repose in the Great Hall, where it was greeted by a congregation of her former clerks and fellow justices.
During a brief ceremonial, Justice Sonia Sotomayor lauded O’Connor’s contribution to both the legal fraternity and the nation. Despite O’Connor’s departure from the court in 2006, three years prior to Sotomayor’s appointment in 2009, she noted the immense impact O’Connor had on her life – referring to her as a “life role model”. The ceremony was attended by all nine sitting justices and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.
