Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, an iconic figure in American legal history, was honored at a recent memorial service in Washington following her passing at age 93. Not only was she revered for breaking down barriers in the political and legal domains but was frequently described as a beacon of fairness and equality.
During the two-hour service at the Washington National Cathedral, President Joe Biden appreciated O’Connor for her dedication to the Supreme Court and to the tenets of equality. “Sandra Day O’Connor, the daughter of the American west, was a pioneer in her own right, breaking down the barriers in the political world and the nation’s conscience. To her, the Supreme Court was the bedrock of America. It was the vital line of defense, devoted not to pursue power for power’s sake but to make real… the American promise that holds that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives,” said Biden.
Chief Justice John Roberts also shared his memories of O’Connor stating, “In nearly a quarter-century on the court she was a strong, influential, iconic jurist. Her leadership shaped the legal profession, making it obvious that judges are both women and men.” These were just some of the sentiments expressed at her memorial service.
In addition to her contributions to the legal world, O’Connor was also an active member of her local community. She regularly attended services at the Episcopal cathedral and served eight years on its governing board.
The service was attended by the current members of the Supreme Court, retired Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, senior members of the court’s staff, O’Connor’s law clerks, veterans of the Reagan administration, lawyers from the U.S. solicitor general’s office, and at least three former U.S. attorneys generals. Among the many tributes and reminiscences shared, O’Connor’s mantra when facing legal decisions and life challenges – “get it done” – was recalled by many.
Justice O’Connor dedicated herself to public service and left an indelible impact on both the legal profession and the wider society. Her passing gives pause to all of us in the legal profession as we take this moment to honor her, her contributions, embrace her legacy and continue her work toward equality and fairness.
