The Enforcement Directorate of India (ED) announced on Tuesday that it has filed a supplementary prosecution complaint incorporating allegations against Robert Vadra, spouse of Priyanka Gandhi, the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress, which constitutes India’s largest opposition party. This information surfaced in an official ED press release.
As detailed in the press release, the complaint is lodged against Non-Resident Indian (NRI) CC Thampi, currently residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and UK citizen Sumit Chadha. Both Thampi and Chadha are being charged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, in a specific court.
The ED’s investigation, initiated by proceedings from the Income Tax Department, discovered undisclosed foreign assets attributed to one Sanjay Bhandari. This discovery led to incriminating evidence against Thampi and Chadha. For the same, Bhandari faces possible extradition. Significant properties, worth 26.55 Crore Rupees (approximately 3.1 million USD), have been seized. Of the accused, Thampi, who maintains a connection with Robert Vadra, has been implicated in property dealings and monetary transactions with Vadra.
The ED has been operational since 1956, initially focusing on violations of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act. Over the years, its responsibilities evolved, most notably gaining enforcement duties for the Prevention of Money Laundering Act from July 2005 onward, as well as duties associated with the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA) since April 2018.
Commenting on the case, Pawan Khera, the Chairman of the Media & Publicity Department of the All India Congress Committee, expressed his belief that this is just the beginning leading up to the upcoming elections, suggesting a conspiracy at play.
In the upcoming months, India is set to conduct its general elections for the upper house of its Parliament, or Rajya Sabha, selecting 543 members. General elections in India also lead to the appointment of the country’s Prime Minister.
