New York Assemblyman Alex Bores, D-Manhattan, has reaffirmed his commitment to lifting the population-based cap on the state’s trial court judges with the “No Cap Act”, an initiative set to return to lawmakers debate in 2024. According to the act’s stipulations, the current cap that limits the number of justices to one per 50,000 residents in the state’s 13 judicial districts would be abolished. The intention behind this proactive measure is not yet disclosed.
The State Senate passed the “No Cap Act” with a considerable majority of 44-14 votes in May of 2023. However, the bill did not experience the same success in the Assembly’s 2023 session, where it stalled in committee. Notwithstanding this initial setback, Assemblyman Bores remains steadfast in his dedication to push the legislation forward in the upcoming 2024 session.
