Armed Factions Target Manipur Security Forces: Growing Instability in Northeastern India

India’s Manipur Police reported on Tuesday that several armed factions launched an attack on state security forces, resulting in six personnel being injured. This incident took place in the northeastern state of Manipur, which has been a hotbed of ethnic clashes and instability for the past year.

The assault took place in Moreh, Tengnoupal District and involved the use of firearms and explosives against a joint unit of the security forces. Six personnel sustained shrapnel injuries in the ensuing counteroffensive and were evacuated for medical attention to Imphal, Manipur state’s capital city. The security forces continue to maintain a high level of alert to counter any possible adverse incidents.

Responding to the situation, Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh stated that they are working tirelessly with Central and State forces to counter the threat. He revealed that a search operation is underway and reinforcements have been sent in. He also mentioned suspicions of the involvement of foreign machinery originating from Myanmar. Singh reiterated their commitment to the people of the state and reassured them that they would not succumb to such threats and pressures.

This assault comes a day after unidentified armed individuals reportedly attacked Lilong Chingjao in the Thoubal District, leading to four deaths and 14 injuries. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. After the violent incident, the local administration imposed a curfew in the area to maintain law and order.

Manipur has been grappling with social instability for quite some time, with an internet shutdown imposed since May 2023 due to continuing ethnic violence. Clashes between the Meitei majority and the Kuki-Zomi-Mizo-Chin tribal communities erupted on May 3, 2023, leading to over 120 reported deaths and 3,000 injuries. The conflict centers around the demand for “scheduled tribe” status by the Meiteis, as recognized by the Constitution. The violence led to the deployment of military forces and mass displacement of people. The situation remains tense, with constant apprehensions of a potential civil war.
