In a challenging year where 2023 became a slow year for M&A transactions, prominent Wall Street Law firm Kirkland & Ellis emerged as a leading adviser, providing counsel on several major transactions. The year witnessed the lowest number of M&A transactions in a decade. However, Kirkland managed to retain its position as Big Law’s top adviser.
According to Bloomberg data, Kirkland & Ellis headed the charts in terms of both deal volume and count – advising on 603 deals that accounted for nearly $343 billion. The firm served an advisory role for private equity firm Hellman & Friedman who had a stake in cybersecurity firm Splunk Inc., purchased by Cisco Systems Inc. for a hefty $28 billion. Additionally, Kirkland’s legal counsel was critical in advising energy giant, ONEOK Inc., on its acquisition of Magellan Midstream Partners, a transaction valued at nearly $19billion.
Despite it being a tough year for the sector, Kirkland & Ellis displayed remarkable performance, reinforcing its stand as Big Law’s top M&A adviser. The law firm’s ability to secure position in a difficult market milestone showcases its ability to adapt to rapidly changing market conditions, ensuring the consistent delivery of comprehensive legal advice to its clients.
