Kirkland & Ellis Tops Global M&A League Table Amid Slow Deal Activity

In a year marked by a sluggish pace in deal activity, Kirkland & Ellis climbed to the summit of the 2023 global M&A league tables, unseating Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, the 2022 title holder for M&A deal value. Goodwin Procter sustained its leadership in terms of deal count in the Big Law scene.

Additionally, Shearman & Sterling registered the most significant ascend in ranking among the top 25 firms in terms of value. In contrast, Weil, Gotshal & Manges experienced the steepest fall.

As revealed by the London Stock Exchange Group’s data, Kirkland was responsible for the most substantial total deal value. The law firm commanded $397 billion in value spread across 644 deals. This performance places Kirkland at the fourth spot, an improvement from its last year’s rank.

It should be noted that 2023 has been the slowest full-year period for M&A since 2013, shaping the battle for the top spot in the M&A arena.
