Navigating a Unique Legal Exodus: FisherBroyles and the Uncommonly Amicable Departure

In a surprising turn of events, FisherBroyles, the pioneer among distributed law firms to grace the Am Law 200, saw a significant number of its attorneys departing the organisation. This great shift has, however, been noted for its relatively smooth and uncontentious nature.

FisherBroyles initially gained momentum and prestige quite quickly, becoming a prominent name in the world of virtual law firms. Then, as Justin Henry, a renowned colleague of ours, reported in early December, there was a significant exodus of lawyers from the venture. Our initial reporting was challenged by managing partner James Fisher, who questioned the numbers cited.

While a reason for the sudden departure of attorneys in large numbers has not been clearly stated, what stands out is the lack of bitterness attached to the issue. Often, mass departures or split-offs can result in substantial legal strife or inter-organisational tension. Here, however, there is a noticeable absence of rancor and tension, making the situation relatively unique within the legal sphere.
