Elon Musk, renowned for his outspoken nature on the value of free speech, is taking heat for what some perceive as hypocritical behavior at his aerospace company, SpaceX. Recently, Musk has been accused of exhibiting authoritarian tendencies, contrary to his vocal stance against curtailment of free speech.
The observation that spawned these allegations stemmed from a quote from Aniceto Masferrer’s book, The Decline of Freedom of Expression and Social Vulnerability in Western Democray, particularly it’s exposition on the suppression of dissenting voices in authoritarian and totalitarian regimes.
These concerns were echoed in relation to a recent incident reported by HuffPost, in which eight SpaceX employees were allegedly terminated after writing an open letter voicing their dissatisfaction with management and culture at Musk’s company. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which filed a formal complaint about the matter, alleges that the employees were unlawfully fired and were interrogated and pressured not to distribute the letter, which criticized Musk’s social media behavior.
Notably, these accusations come in the face of Musk’s well-known opposition to unions, exemplified by his likening of them to a feudal system of lords and peasants. Critics argue that his dismissal of the benefits of union protection may have directly contributed to the scenario these eight employees found themselves in after expressing their concerns.
This has led some to question Musk’s apparent high tolerance for free speech. The billionaire CEO’s unfiltered social media discourse has, in the past, been a cause of financial setbacks for his companies and has previously invited legal trouble.
As reported, Musk’s response to critics has been to maintain that if there are issues with his cars, his human resources capabilities, or his acceptance of constructive criticism, it’s not a problem with him, but with the critics themselves. However, given recent events, it is apparent that this sentiment is under scrutiny.
