Trump Targets Weissmann with Inaccurate Claims, Former Prosecutor Defends with Facts

Former President Donald Trump’s fervent remarks have long spurred controversy, the latest victim being former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, who became Trump’s fresh target of criticism. In a recent tirade, Trump labelled Weissmann the “slimeball boss” of special prosecutor Jack Smith. However, the facts say otherwise.

Despite being the lead prosecutor in Robert Mueller’s Special Counsel’s Office, Weissmann had left his post in 2019, long before the incidents leading to the charges the special prosecutor, Smith, has since filed. Weissmann is now an analyst with MSNBC, providing him a solid platform to challenge Trump’s accusations.

In a recent segment on Inside with Jen Psaki, Weissmann offered counterpoint to his allegations. Clearly stating that, “One is the use of adjectives and adverbs. That is not legal argument. That is not a factual argument, any more than if you say the election was stolen.” He emphasized the necessity of evidence and facts in any serious discourse.

Weissmann added that resorting to mere adjectives and adverbs was no productive way of arguing, especially for an individual who had once held the highest office in the United States. He also discredited the claim that he was Jack Smith’s boss by asking for factual support of the statement, emphasizing that he has had zero communications with Smith or his team. “They are independent, both within the Department of Justice and certainly for a legal analyst on MSNBC,” Weissmann affirmed.

This contestation underscores the persistent tension between Trump and those involved in legal investigations related to his previous administration. Further, it also highlights the importance of objective, evidence-backed discourse over personal attacks in addressing such matters.
