United Nations officials demanded profound accountability following the attacks that took place in Israel on October 7. These attacks reportedly involved severe violations of international law such as killings, hostage-taking, and instances of torture, with an emphasis on sexual torture.
According to the experts, armed Palestinian groups carried out the attacks in Israeli communities bordering the Gaza Strip, and the majority of victims were civilians who experienced targeted and brutal assaults. The experts have expressed deep concern over the mounting evidence, especially the reported instances of sexual violence.
As described by the United Nations specialists, some individuals were allegedly burnt alive in their homes or bomb shelters, while others were found decapitated or mutilated. Many of the bodies showed signs of trauma consistent with executions, and there were prevalent signs of injuries suggesting beatings at or near the time of death.
The experts have categorized these acts as grave violations of international law, which could potentially amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. This is given the extent of premeditation and planning that went into the attacks. They reiterated that under no circumstances can such actions be justified, and they highlighted the importance of acknowledging the damage and seeking justice as vital steps towards achieving peace.
The October 7 attacks affected approximately 22 villages, resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli and foreign nationals losing their lives, and thousands more were wounded. Reports estimate that about 240 individuals, including adults, children, and infants, were taken hostage. Israel has already criticized the international organization for not doing enough to draw attention to the alleged crimes.
Unfortunately, similar instances are not isolated cases. There have been several war crimes and instances of sexual violence reported across Africa and the Middle East. For example, on January 3, 2024, an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights in Uganda was stabbed and is currently in critical condition in the hospital. Moreover, on January 6, a 16-year-old boy who was reportedly tortured by the Iranian government died as a result of his injuries.
