The US President Joe Biden has nominated the first person of color, Judge Melissa DuBose, for the District of Rhode Island. If confirmed, DuBose will make history as the first person of color to serve on this district court. She has been an associate judge on Rhode Island state District Court in Providence since 2019 and formerly worked as a prosecutor in the state’s attorney general office.
Along with DuBose, Biden nominated five other individuals, including the president and executive director of the MacArthur Justice Center. They are intended for various judicial positions, reinforcing Biden’s commitment to bring greater diversity to the nation’s judicial system.
Among them is also Amir Ali, the current head of the MacArthur Justice Center, who is Biden’s intended nominee for a District of Columbia trial court seat. Ali has led the justice center since 2021 and has previously served as director of the Criminal Justice Appellate Clinic at Harvard.
The administration’s decisions reflect a persistent push to diversify the seats of the country’s judiciary, an attempt to incorporate a variety of perspectives and experiences to the administration of justice in the US.
