California State Bar Addresses Budget Shortfall by Reducing Bar Exam Locations

In an effort to address its budget limitations, the State Bar of California is planning to decrease the number of locations where it administers the bar exam. The proposal, confirmed by a spokesperson, aims to reduce the locations for the July 2024 examination from seven to either five or six.

This decision comes as part of the Bar’s strategic maneuvers to solve a looming budget shortfall. Notably, it has been voiced that the proposed change is not warmly welcomed by the Bar’s Admission staff. This move could shift some of the financial burdens from the Bar to the applicants, a concern that the staff openly acknowledged in August.

The members of the Board of Trustees are expected to throw their votes on this cost-cutting measure by the end of the week, according to an agenda document. While a remote exam was considered, it appears that the idea has been disregarded for the time being.

Legal professionals and bar exam aspirants are keeping a close eye on these developments. The decision could have wide-ranging implications, especially for those applicants who may need to arrange travel or accommodation to take the exam, increasing their personal costs. Discussion about the Bar’s fiscal management and consideration of a shift towards online exams is likely to continue.
