Cambodian Government Critic Ny Nak Arrested on Defamation Charges Amid Crackdown on Dissent

In ongoing eye-catching news, outspoken Cambodian critic Ny Nak, who was reportedly assaulted with his wife by men wielding batons in 2023, has been arrested on charges of defamation. The charges were initiated by a cabinet minister relating to posts he made on Facebook criticizing the Ministry of Agriculture.

Nak previously served an 18-month prison sentence for directly criticizing the government for its Covid-19 measures and was aggressively attacked in September 2023 by unknown masked men after publicly airing more accusations against the government. Strikingly, these masked attacks mostly target opposition members, yet no perpetrators have been brought to justice for these violent crimes.

Cambodian Labor Minister Sun Mesa publicly defended the arrest, insisting that while Ny Nak had the right to express his views, the government also holds the right to legally pursue him for allegedly “speaking without truth.”

This occurrence is the latest in an alleged sweep against government dissenters in Cambodia. Kem Sokha, another critic of Cambodia’s leadership, was sentenced to 27 years in prison for treason and “conspiring with foreign powers.” Phil Robertson, Deputy Asia Director at Human Rights Watch (HRW), stated that current Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, son of Hun Sen, whose term as Prime Minister was tarnished with allegations of stifling critics, “ is following closely in his father’s steps by restricting the rights to voice opinions, join independent groups, and gather for peaceful public demonstrations.”
