Iran Arrests 35 ISIS-Linked Individuals for Kerman Attacks, Vows Retribution

The Ministry of Intelligence in Iran released a statement announcing the arrest of 35 “suicide terrorist operatives” in connection with the January 3 attacks in Kerman. These attacks included bombings that reportedly killed at least 103 and injured over 100 people. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Abdullah Tajiki, a Tajikistani, was identified as the main organizer and supporter of the operation. Bazirov “Bouzerov” from Tajikistan is revealed to be linked to ISIS. The first attack took place 700 meters from the gravesite of General Haj Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a previous US strike. The second suicide bomber detonated 1000 meters away.

Further operations led to additional arrests and the discovery of the ISIS team’s base, where explosive devices were found. The ministry’s investigation – detailing the plotters’ identities and their connections – continues, resulting in 35 arrests in various provinces so far. The ministry plans to extend the search beyond the country’s borders and calls for continuous support from Iranians in reporting suspicious activity.

Shortly after attacks on January 3rd, that killed at least 84 people and injured many more, Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Khamenei offered strong words. In a tweet, he noted that ‘the enemy should know the soldiers on Soleimani’s path won’t tolerate their vileness & crime. The hands stained with the blood of innocent people & the corrupt, evil minds that misdirected them will definitely be the target of a severe pounding & deserving retribution.’

The incident is being treated as a terrorist attack. Reports suggest the attackers used explosive-laden suitcases equipped with remote controllers. Following the explosions, further injuries were sustained due to a stampede caused by panic among the people.
