Peru Prosecutors Seek 34-Year Sentence for Ex-President Castillo Amid Political Turmoil

The precarious political landscape of Peru is further turbulent as prosecutors from Peru’s Public Ministry have requested a 34-year prison term for former President Pedro Castillo. The ex-president, currently in detention, faces charges of rebellion and conspiracy against the state following an alleged coupe d’etat in December 2022. The preferred sentence, as announced by the Public Ministry via a social media post, comes on the heels of charges that include rebellion, abuse of authority, and grave disturbance of peace.

This is merely another episode in a series of political crises and public unrest that has swept the South American country over the past decade. Hailing from an impoverished background, Pedro Castillo made a charismatic rise to power as the Free Peru Party’s leftist candidate, exploiting his promises for reform and a fight against widespread corruption.

Nonetheless, Castillo’s journey as a political newcomer has been fraught with obstacles. His tenure as president met with formidable resistance from a majority Peruvian Congress, even dealing with various lawsuits related to corruption, including an impeachment attempt from the onset of his term. Presidency woes compounded when an attempt to dissolve the legislative body, followed by his removal from the office for alleged “moral incapacity.”

Following his dismissal and subsequent detention, rigorous anti-government protests shook the country, resulting in 55 fatalities in the aftermath of demonstrations against the neutral government headed by ex-Vice President Dina Boluarte. The suppression of these protests has been universally condemned by human rights organizations, including the UN, prompting the Public Ministry to commence prosecutions against Castillo and an ensuing probe against incumbent President Boluarte regarding the police’s handling of the unrest.

Castillo, however, remains resolute in his claims of innocence, insisting that he is a victim of political revenge hatched by a dictatorial congress in conjunction with business elites.
