Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira Granted Bail Amid Criminal Intimidation and Drug Trafficking Accusations

A local court in India approved the bail for Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a notable figure in the Indian National Congress, India’s largest opposition party, on Monday. Khaira, a Congress MLA from the Bhulath constituency in Punjab state, is accused in a 2015 case of criminal intimidation connected to the smuggling of narcotic substances.

The Kapurthala court granted Khaira bail, who then celebrated his release from the Nabha jail on Facebook.

In addition, Khaira faced other charges under Sections 195A (threatening to give false evidence) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. These additional charges derive from a statement against Khaira by Kashmir Singh, a witness in a drug case, which led to concerns for his family’s safety and consequently a registered criminal complaint against Khaira.
