Just recently, former White House counsel Pat Cipollone has made the move to join Torridon Law, the firm co-founded by former Attorney General Bill Barr and Facebook’s ex-general counsel, Ted Ullyot. The newest recruit is no newcomer to positions of responsibility: Cipollone succeeded Don McGahn as White House counsel in October 2018 for President Donald Trump, and took on the defense for Trump during his first impeachment trial two years later. He also played an instrumental role in the Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett.
But Cipollone is not alone in making the transition. Torridon Law is also welcoming former deputy White House counsels Pat Philbin and Kate Todd, both of whom are joining from Ellis George Cipollone O’Brien Annaguey, the litigation boutique headquartered in Los Angeles. This firm, in fact, just launched its Washington office in 2021, an expansion that involved the efforts of Cipollone, Philbin, and Todd. More about the launch here.
The familiarity among the new recruits at Torridon is not confined to their shared work experience at Ellis George Cipollone O’Brien Annaguey. As expressed by Barr himself in a statement, “We have known Pat Cipollone, Pat Philbin, and Kate Todd and worked with them both in and out of government for thirty years.” Affirming the new team’s quality, he further stated, “There is no finer team that we could imagine bringing together.”
Beyond the group from Ellis George Cipollone O’Brien Annaguey, Torridon is also staffing up with some other key hires. These additions include Fred Fielding, former White House counsel, and Tim Shea, former Acting Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator, as well as partners Tara Helfman and John Coghlan, and associates Chase Harrington and Kyle West. This latest wave of recruits brings Torridon’s legal workforce up to 11 lawyers, quite an impressive growth since its founding in late 2022.
