Son of Somalia President Fined in Turkish Court for Causing Death by Negligence

According to reports from Anadolu Agency, Türkiye’s İstanbul 33rd Criminal Court of First Instance issued a noteworthy verdict on Tuesday. The court levied a fine of 27,300 Turkish lira on Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, son of Somalia president, for causing death by negligence.

The accusations stemmed from an incident that occurred on November 30, 2023 where Mohamud engaged in a collision with Yunus Emre Göçer, a motorcycle courier. Göçer suffered substantial injuries from the incident and tragically passed away six days later. Mohamud, having left Türkiye after the incident, was a subject of an international arrest warrant.

Mohamud was found guilty of causing death by negligence, a sentence which initially demanded three years in prison. However, considering several factors as stated in Article 62 of the Turkish Penal Code, such as social relations, post-trial behavior, and potential repercussions of the sentence, the court reduced his sentence to 2 years and 6 months in prison. His prison sentence was subsequently commuted to a fine considering his personality and the remorse he expressed during the trial.

On public front, Mesut Çeki, president of the Courier Rights Association, voiced his discontent about this ruling, arguing that the monetary penalty does not equate to the loss of a human life. On the other hand, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of Somalia, pledged that he and his son, Mohammed, would respect the Turkish laws and the judicial system in a conversation with the AP news in December 2023.

This incident has drawn attention given the close ties between Turkey and Somalia, which have their roots from the Ottoman Empire era. The relationship was further solidified when former Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Somalia in August 2011 to render support amidst their drought crisis and ongoing technical development assistance.
