A new development in the United Kingdom’s (UK) sanctions regime has emerged, revolving around billionaire Eugene Shvidler’s efforts to challenge the UK’s sanctions. Mr. Shvidler, an ally of Roman Abramovich, renewed his appeal in the UK court, claiming that former Transport Secretary Grant Shapps had directly influenced the Foreign Office to impose sanctions against him, according to an article by Bloomberg Law.
Mr. Shvidler, often referred to as Abramovich’s “right-hand man,” brought his case to the court in London on Wednesday. This marks the first appeal of the UK’s sanctions measures following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In his arguments, Mr. Shvidler contended that he has encountered “serious hardships” due to the UK’s sanctions, which has led to the impounding of his private jets. Furthermore, he has steadfastly denied allegations suggesting his close association with Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
In addition, another associate, a superyacht owner, is also vying to liberate his luxury vessel currently tied up under the UK’s strict regulations.
