Thomas Reid, the former managing partner of Davis Polk & Wardwell, took the stand on Thursday to provide testimony in the retaliation lawsuit brought against the firm by ex-associate, Kaloma Cardwell. Reid, among other defendants named in the suit, recounted Cardwell’s alleged performance shortcomings back in 2017. As per Reid’s recounting, Cardwell, who had been the sole Black male in Davis Polk’s associate class of 2014, suffered critiques that potentially threatened his future legal career.
Cardwell lodged the suit against Davis Polk, its then managing partner Reid, and a host of other attorneys belonging to the firm, back in 2019. This was the same year when Reid departed from the firm to transition into his new role of Chief Legal Officer at Comcast. Cardwell’s lawsuit alleges retaliation, a claim stemming from his performance review comments which, if not addressed promptly, could have proven detrimental to his career path.
