Several prominent investment funds have recently made significant changes to their in-house legal teams. Such personnel updates, common during the start of a new year, are seen in industry big names such as Point72 Asset Management LP, Apollo Global Management Inc., and others.
Point72 has appointed its deputy general counsel Jason Colombo as the new general counsel. Colombo, previously a Schulte Roth & Zabel associate, will continue overseeing legal matters for Point72’s core hedge fund business while reporting to Vincent Tortorella, the firm’s chief surveillance officer. Last year, Point72 significantly expanded its operations which led to key additions in their in-house legal expertise. Along with these structural enhancements, the firm recruited several other lawyers last year, including Harry Greenbaum from Citadel LLC. Owner Steve Cohen has also involved several members of the Point72 team to serve roles within his newly acquired baseball team, the New York Mets.
Apollo Global Management experienced a change in their top legal position as chief legal officer John Suydam moved to an advisory and partner role. His replacement is Whitney Chatterjee, who joined Apollo last year as the general counsel for the firm’s asset management and retirement services businesses.
Aside from these shifts, CVC Capital Partners Ltd. announced the hiring of Allen & Overy senior litigation and restructuring partner Brechje van der Velden as its chief lawyer. She replaces CVC’s former global general counsel Lauren Livingston, who has stepped down to start her own leadership advisory business.
Lastly, Pacific Investment Management Co. LLC, also known as Pimco, appointed Sung-Hee Suh as its global general counsel, succeeding David Flattum who decided to retire but will stay on as a consultant.
