The Indian National Congress, the largest opposition party in India, has issued a show-cause notice to its spokesperson, Alok Sharma, over his controversial remarks against former Chief Minister of the Madhya Pradesh (MP) state, Kamal Nath. The statements were made during a recent interview with 4pm news channel. Click here to see the issued notice.
The Madhya Pradesh State Congress unit confirmed the notice implementation under its official Twitter, now known as X, handle. The notice quotes Sharma’s remarks as ‘unwarranted, baseless, objectionable and undignified’ towards Nath. The show-cause notice also points out that these statements coming from a senior office bearer were not only unauthorized and defamatory but also seemed to undermine the Party and senior colleagues.
As stated in the notice, Indian National Congress party members must acknowledge the sanctity of party discipline any breach of which carries significant repercussions. If Sharma’s clarification is not received within the stipulated two-day deadline or is deemed insufficient, necessary action will ensue.
In his interview with 4pm, which followed Congress’s defeat in the December 2023 MP state election, Sharma expressed disappointment over Nath’s interview with a journalist blacklisted by the INDIA alliance. Sharma further alleged Nath of having a potential alliance with the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), accusing him of obstructing government formation in MP and distributing constituency tickets out of arrogance, thus spoiling the election atmosphere.
The state election held on November 17, 2023, in Madhya Pradesh saw BJP securing 163 of 230 seats, becoming victorious. Subsequently, Congress secured 66 seats, becoming the second-largest party, while a local tribal party named Bharat Adivasi Party secured one seat. View the election details here.
