A formal complaint, officially referred to as a first information report (FIR), has recently been lodged against an
election awareness initiative orchestrated by India’s primary opposition party and its chief instigator, as reported by the
Press Trust of India’s law enforcement correspondents. The FIR, submitted on Thursday, accuses the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, a campaign led by K B Byju, of deviating from their sanctioned route through Jorhat, Assam. The charges
further contend that the march did not observe the mandated district administration guidelines and road safety standards.
The Indian opposition political leader Rahul Gandhi spearheads the demonstration as a part of a larger protest against the incumbent regime, ahead of the nation’s general elections. The
Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has already traversed 15 states, covering more than 6,700 km in a timespan of 66 days- a journey that is still ongoing. It took off on January 14 in Manipur and is expected to culminate in Mumbai on March 20th.
The occurrence has sparked
accusations of underhanded tactics and lack of transparency against Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Concurrently, Gaurav Gogoi, the opposition party leader, has
publicly declared their party’s confidence in the support of the Indian masses.
Distinguished opposition leader and Indian National Congress (INC) member, Gandhi, faced prior disqualification from the lower house of parliament, known as Lok Sabha, after a District Court in Surat, Gujarat convicted him of criminal defamation in 2019. However, the Supreme Court of India issued a stay on the conviction order from the Surat District Court, thereby
reinstating his parliamentary membership.
