Former Dentons Associate Banned: Inappropriate Conduct Spurs Call for Safer Work Environments in Law Firms

A recent incident has further highlighted the need for a safe and respectful working environment even within the confines of law firms. Former Dentons corporate associate, Gordon Herd, faced disciplinary action following a work event in London in September 2021. It has been alleged that Herd touched a female co-worker’s thighs and backside without her consent during this event. This grievous misconduct was reported by Roll on Friday.

A statement provided by the distressed female colleague delineated the inappropriate advances, which included Herd placing his leg between her legs, rubbing her thighs and backside, and standing uncomfortably close to her.

The world’s biggest law firm by headcount, Dentons, promptly investigated the incident. However, Gordon Herd resigned before any punitive action could be taken.

Intent on standing firm against such misconduct, Dentons reported the matter to the British regulators, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), and the Law Society of Scotland. The firm reiterated its commitment to an environment free from harassment and that everyone must treat others with dignity and respect.

The SRA found Herd’s involvement in any legal practice undesirable without any prior approval, due to the severity of his conduct that made his colleague feel vulnerable, uncomfortable, and distressed.

Despite these events, Herd still remains on the Scottish Roll. Although the Law Society of Scotland did not confirm any particular complaints case, it has reassured that if there’s any reason to believe a member has not met high professional standards, action will be taken.
