Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has proposed amendments to the nation’s constitution to permit dual citizenship. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskiy acknowledged the support of Ukrainians living abroad during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which was commemorated on Unity Day, observed annually on January 22nd. This day marks the unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic into a singular, independent nation in 1919.
Additionally, the President expressed gratitude towards the diaspora for their efforts in providing essential aid to Ukraine in its time of need. Explaining the concept of dual citizenship, it signifies an individual’s recognized legal status as a citizen across two or more countries as per each nation’s laws. However, the current Constitution of Ukraine (Article 4) only permits a single national citizenship.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has also shown support for this proposal during his address to the World Congress of Ukraine. He highlighted the potential of multiple citizenships as a means of fostering a global community and moving forward with Ukraine’s development.
