Sotomayor Cites Surprise at Supreme Court’s Increased Workload and Fatigue

In recent comments, Justice Sonia Sotomayor has expressed surprise at the workload of the Supreme Court and confessed to feeling fatigued, citing the court’s large cases, an expanding emergency calendar, and briefs from various external groups. The remarks suggest a departure from her expectations as she approaches the age of 70.

She shared her thoughts during a recent interaction at the University of California, Berkeley’s law school. Bloomberg reports her saying: “And to be almost 70 years old, this isn’t what I expected, but it is still work that is all-consuming and I understand the impact the court has on people and on the country, and sometimes the world. And so it is what keeps me going.”

Justice Sotomayor, who was appointed to the court by President Barack Obama, did not detail the types of cases contributing to the increased workload or what changes, if any, she perceives in the court’s handling of the said cases.
