Iran executed four individuals it claims were associated with an Israeli intelligence operation backed by Israel’s Mossad Agency. These individuals were charged with orchestrating a bomb attack on a factory in the city of Isfahan, known for manufacturing weapons and equipment for Iran’s Ministry of Defence. Iranian intelligence managed to avert the intended bomb plot during the summer of 2022.
As per a statement from Mizan Online, an entity affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, Mossad – Israel’s intelligence agency, identified and recruited all four individuals. The agency allegedly then sent these individuals to several African countries to undergo operational training at different stages.
The individuals were charged with intelligence cooperation in favour of the usurping Zionist regime, a deed which is punishable by death according to the Law on Confronting Hostile Acts of Zionists against Peace and Security. They were also accused of forming and managing a terrorist group aimed at disrupting Iran’s national security. Both these convictions were upheld by the Islamic Revolution Court and latterly, by the Supreme Court.
Iran, in December 2023, also executed four other individuals (including a woman) over allegations involving Mossad in sabotage operations. Israel and Iran, historical foes, continue their discord in not just politically driven tensions and regional power struggles, but also through proxy engagements in the region.
UN experts, last week, urged Iran to halt its ongoing tide of executions concerning another case. Iran’s high rate of executions, especially involving minors and activists continues to draw global criticism. Critics urge Iran to align with international standards and abolish the death penalty. Iran’s legal system, however, supports capital punishment under its Islamic Penal Code, thereby maintaining its status as a leading country in executions. In fact, Iran Human Rights reports a total of 52 executions in the year 2024 alone.
