Renowned legal technology firm Clio, initially catering to individual practitioners and small firms, has recently declared to amplify its focus on mid-sized law firms which have over 20 employees. Having been introduced to the market 16 years ago as a practice management platform for smaller law firms, the company aims at meeting the unique technological demands of mid-sized firms in a rapidly advancing tech industry.
Jack Newton, Clio’s founder and CEO, actuates the need for mid-sized law firms to prepare for an industry increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasized that larger firms are already incorporating major AI investments and smaller, nimble firms are at the forefront of AI adoption. Thus, it becomes important for mid-sized firms to ensure their future technology needs are met.
Clio boasts of a subscription from over 1,000 mid-sized law firms and is planning to augment its investment in products tailored to this market. As part of its refocussed initiative, the company has presented its 2024 Legal Trends for Mid-Sized Firms report, which suggests a substantial gap in the adoption of cloud-based legal practice management software between mid-sized firms and their smaller counterparts. Lawnext reports that only 27% of mid-sized firms are utilizing cloud-based products compared to a steep 73% of smaller firms.
Such data indicates a potential AI readiness and technological integration deficit across the mid-sized segment. Clio advocates cloud-based practice management products as pivotal for firms planning to implement AI. In 2024, the company is set to launch Clio Duo, a proprietarily developed generative AI tool which will be natively integrated into all Clio products, starting with Clio Manage.
The first generation of Clio Duo will offer a range of features including:
- Personalized task completion recommendations and work efficiency boosts.
- Reminder prompts for impending bill approvals and overdue tasks.
- Bill generation as per specific client-related activities.
- Document summarization and creation of manageable documents.
- Improved client communications via matter overviews.
- Conversations with Duo for firm business performance insights or better understanding.
Asserting Clio’s commitment as beyond just software, Newton emphasizes on empowering mid-sized law firms to flourish in the competitive legal landscape by equipping them with essential tools and knowledge.
