Clio Targets Mid-Sized Law Firms: Bridging the AI Readiness Gap in the Legal Sector

Clio, a legal technology company established 16 years ago, initially created a law practice management platform aimed at solo practitioners and small law firms. The company has announced their intent to increase their focus on mid-sized law firms, which typically employ more than 20 individuals. Click here for more details

Jack Newton, founder and CEO of Clio, notes the unique challenges mid-sized law firms face in a market where rapid technological advancement is the key to success. Large law firms are making substantial investments in AI, the pace of adoption is swift in smaller, nimble firms, and mid-sized firms must plan for an industry that will be significantly impacted by AI.

While already serving over 1,000 mid-sized law firms, Clio plans to invest more heavily in products catered specifically to this market segment.

Released alongside this announcement, was Clio’s 2024 Legal Trends for Mid-Sized Firms report. It highlights a considerable discrepancy between smaller and mid-sized firms when it comes to the uptake of cloud-based legal practice management software. Staggeringly, only 27% of mid-sized law firms utilize cloud-based products, as opposed to 73% of smaller enterprises.

Clio posits that this difference could potentially indicate a gap in AI readiness across mid-sized firms. It adds that adopting cloud-based practice management products can be critical first steps for firms that want to implement AI.

Last year, Clio publicized their upcoming launch of Clio Duo in 2024. This proprietary generative AI tool will be integrated into all Clio products, starting with Clio Manage. The first-generation product is expected to offer:

  • Personalized recommendations for task prioritization and work efficiency enhancement
  • Reminder prompts for pending bill approvals and overdue tasks
  • Bill generation based on specific client-related activities
  • Document summarization and creation of basic documents
  • Case overviews for improved client communication
  • Interactive features with Duo for insights on the firm’s business performance

Newton asserts that Clio’s commitment extends beyond software. The company seeks to enable mid-sized firms to succeed in the competitive legal landscape by providing the necessary tools and knowledge.
