Ira Kustin Rejoins Akin Gump’s NY Investment Management Practice

Prominent legal professional, Ira Kustin, has recently made a move to rejoin Akin as a partner in its Investment Management practice in New York. This development was confirmed by the firm on a recent Thursday.

Kustin maintains a practice focused on the formation and operation of private investment fund vehicles and accounts. Besides, his repertoire also includes advising investment fund managers on securities law and Advisers Act compliance issues. Driven by his expertise, he has handled complex fund restructurings and fund-related conflict resolutions.

Recently, Kustin was a significant member of the team from Paul Hastings that advised Brookfield Asset Management and Brookfield Oaktree Wealth Solutions on their new venture, Brookfield Infrastructure Income strategy. He joined the Paul Hastings in 2018 and is now making the move back to Akin.

Akin Chairperson, Kim Koopersmith, expressed her happiness over Kustin’s return stating, “In a landscape where top-notch lawyers who can advise alternative investment management funds on formation, operation and regulatory issues are highly sought after, we are pleased to welcome Ira back to our premier funds team.”

Beyond Kustin’s return, Akin’s investment management practice has seen a spate of key additions lately. This includes the likes of James Munsell, former partner at Sidley Austin. Additionally, Max Karpel from Lowenstein Sandler, and Patrick Dundas from Schulte Roth & Zabel have also joined the firm in recent times.

Responding about his return, Kustin noted that “The firm’s collaborative culture, superior intellectual capital and the client-focused approach are unmatched and I am eager to work with new and previous colleagues to advise our range of clients across the private funds spectrum. Furthermore, there is a great sense of joy and anticipation in joining the investment management practice again.”
