A year ago, Bridget Mary McCormack, the former Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, assumed the position of President and CEO of the American Arbitration Association (AAA). McCormack, known for her innovative approach to expanding access to justice, has amplified the AAA’s innovation techniques even further since her arrival, particularly in the adoption of generative AI.
Significantly contributing to these innovations is Diana Didia, Senior Vice President and Chief Information and Innovation Officer at the AAA. Didia’s efforts in igniting the association’s innovation initiatives have not only established a foundation for continued innovation, but have also been instrumental as AAA moves toward embracing generative AI.
McCormack, Didia and their team have been working relentlessly over the past year to further stimulate innovation at the AAA and incorporate AI into its own work and the broader dispute resolution field. They have recently launched the AAAi Lab, a site offering support to AAA users, arbitrators, in-house counsel and law firms by providing policy guidance, educational webinars and tools for adopting generative AI.
The team also developed ClauseBuilder, a generative AI tool designed to assist in drafting concise and effective Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) clauses. At the time of our conversation, they were gearing up to discuss the AAA’s innovative initiatives and its transition towards AI at a panel during Legalweek in New York.
Overall, the AAA’s advancements in embracing generative AI stand as a notable example for other organizations engaged in dispute resolution. The efforts of McCormack and Didia underscore the transformative power of technological innovation, marking a significant shift in the world of arbitration towards a more effective and efficient model.
