Healthcare giant, Novo Nordisk A/S has confirmed the purchase of three manufacturing plants at the cost of 11 billion dollars. The move is aimed at meeting the expanding demand for its obesity medication, Wegovy and diabetes treatment, Ozempic. Bloomberg Law reports that Novo Nordisk procured these production sites from its principal shareholder, Novo Holdings A/S.
This follows Novo Holdings A/S’s acquisition of Catalent Inc., the owner of the three manufacturing plants, in a transaction with an enterprise value of $16.5 billion. The market has responded positively to these developments, with Catalent’s share price increasing approximately 13% in premarket trading. Shares in Novo Nordisk have also experienced an upward trajectory in response to the growing demand for its remedies for diabetes and weight-loss.
These moves demonstrate Novo Nordisk is firmly focused on scaling up the production of its sought-after drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy. Heightened demand for these treatments has put the pharmaceutical company under considerable pressure to increase its manufacturing capabilities significantly.
