Swedish prosecutors announced on Wednesday their decision to terminate the investigation into the 2022 explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines. It was concluded that they do not possess jurisdiction over the pipeline. In line with the official decision, sabotage against the Nord Stream pipeline does not fall within the category of crimes “against the security of the kingdom.” The prosecutor’s office has reportedly passed on its findings to Germany, which continues its own investigation.
The Washington Post reported in November that Ukrainian Colonel Roman Chervinsky coordinated the attacks on the Nord Stream pipeline. Chervinsky’s attorney refuted the accusations levied against his client, concerning the pipeline attack. Indeed, Chervinsky is currently being held in a Ukrainian jail on charges related to sharing coordinates of a Ukrainian airfield to a Russian pilot. The incident allegedly culminated in an attack on the field, marking up one fatality and seventeen injuries amongst soldiers.
The Nord Stream pipeline, transporting natural gas from Vyborg, Russia to Greifswald, Germany, experienced a pressure drop seven months after Russia began its invasion of Ukraine. Nord AG identified the cause as a rupture in the pipeline. There is an ongoing Russian investigation into potential sabotage of the pipeline.
