Yale and Stanford Law Schools Shift Virtual Interviews to June: Impact on Legal Recruitment and Education

Yale and Stanford Law Schools have announced a revision to their traditional Occasional Course Interview (OCI) schedule, deciding to move the virtual interviews up to June. According to the announcement from Stanford Law School (SLS), this shift is expected to be less burdensome for students as it would preclude the overlap of OCI and direct applications, thereby restructuring a recruiting process that otherwise would span from June until the end of August.

Both Stanford and Yale law schools are known for their rigorous academic programs and are often the recruitment hubs for some of the biggest law firms. However, the recent shift in their OCI scheduling may impact recruitment strategies in significant ways. Yet, this move is believed to be in the best interest of the students – a move to streamline the onerous task of recruitment, making it less draining for the students involved.

This decision also reflects a potential trend towards adapting traditional legal education and recruitment processes to fit the demands of the modern age. The transition towards virtual interviews had already been catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The introduction of technology in legal recruiting processes, while initially being viewed as a temporary response to the pandemic, has now begun to be accepted as the new normal in legal education and recruitment.

However, the full extent of the impact of such changes remains to be seen and would likely be determined by the outcomes of recruitment drives in the upcoming academic year. For more details about this development, please click here.
