Polish farmers initiated a 30-day nationwide protest this Friday in response to economic pressures placed on their industry from the European Union. The protest consists of road blockades throughout Poland and specifically at border crossings with Ukraine. Strikes are also taking place across the agricultural sector, with more than 250 protest actions occurring countrywide just on the first day.
The Solidarnosc union, responsible for kickstarting the protest, took action after the extension of the EU’s duty-free trade agreement with Ukraine. Protesting farmers demand the inclusion of agricultural-related provisions in the forthcoming Green Deal proposed by the EU. This Green Deal consists of a package of environmental regulations designed to mitigate global warming. Farmers suggest that these mounting environmental rules may lead to a reduction in European agricultural output, currently less than two percent of all EU production.
Concerns rise among Polish farmers that a decline in domestic agricultural production could put the country’s food security at risk. The potential of a conflict with Russia is cited by some protestors as a contributing factor to their anxiety. Polish Agricultural Minister Czesław Siekierski shared his view that the protestors fight for a legitimate cause and that discussions are ongoing to draft new regulations for Polish-Ukrainian trade. However, Siekierski recognises that the ultimate decision rests with the European Parliament.
These protests are part of a broader wave of farmer and trucker protests gripping Europe. Demonstrators accuse the European Parliament of imposing excessive regulations, creating cumbersome bureaucracy, and jeopardizing industry profitability through new legislative proposals. Countries like Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Poland, Greece, and Germany have all seen similar protests recently, with some in Brussels protesting outside the European Parliament using fires, eggs, and blaring truck horns. This wave of demonstrations marks the second consecutive year such protests have happened.
The current protests follow the suspension of a previous blockade at the Ukrainian border by Polish farmers, after they signed a deal with the president.
