A report alleging mass civilian casualties during the Russia siege of Mariupol, Ukraine has been released by human rights organizations, according to an article from Jurist News. Expert groups including Human Rights Watch (HRW), SITY Research, and Truth Hounds announced their findings on the Russian military assault between February and May 2022, alleging numerous civilian casualties – some resulting from likely illegal attacks.
The investigation document states that Russia initiated a comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with the city of Mariupol as a key target. The consequent battle caused substantial loss of life, property, and infrastructure, leading to hundreds of thousands being left trapped without essential services for weeks. A considerable number of civilians and soldiers have been buried in mass graves across the city and surrounding regions.
The report highlights the use of intensive weaponry, including heavy artillery, mortar projectiles, and airstrikes, in densely populated areas. Such practices, it alleges, have caused extensive death and destruction. Furthermore, educational establishments have appeared to bear a significant brunt of the damage, with 86 out of 89 facilities, including university and school campuses, being reported as damaged due to the conflict.
