Budapest Anti-fascist Protests Erupt Amidst Diplomatic Tensions Over Detained Italian Activist

Anti-fascist demonstrators took to the streets of Budapest, Hungary, over the weekend to protest a right-wing gathering commemorating the “Day of Honour”. The “Day of Honour” is an annual event observed in memory of a failed breakout attempt by German and Hungarian forces in 1945, while under siege from the Soviet Red Army. Although the event was initially barred by local law enforcement, a judicial verdict overturned the decision, paving way for the usual festivity. Several far-right groups from Germany, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic, along with members from the right-wing extremist group Blood and Honour, were in attendance. The commemoration was held behind restraints in Városmajor park.

Anti-fascist protesters arranged a responsive demonstration in the city. As reported by the European Roma Rights Centre, the assembled participants expressed their disapproval by sounding sirens, playing drums, and blowing whistles. Many Roma people also joined the protest. To thwart potential conflicts between the two political groups, police were significantly present throughout the city.

These protests happened against the backdrop of a year-long detainment of an Italian anti-fascist activist, Ilaria Salis. Accused of assault during protests opposing the “Day of Honour” in 2023, she has been in Hungarian custody ever since. Salis’ appearance in court, shackled and handcuffed, has raised concerns about the treatment she’s receiving in the prison, with reports citing poor hygiene standards and rodent and insect infestations. The European Parliament is preparing to inspect the circumstances of prisoners in Hungary, with a special focus on her case.

These unfolding events fuel ongoing diplomatic tension between Rome and Budapest, given the continued imprisonment of the Italian anti-fascist activist.
