Yale and Stanford, two of the world’s prominent law schools, are altering the dates of their virtual recruiting programs. This move aims to ease students’ workload and simplify the hiring process, notably for them. The shift to hold the virtual interview programs in June, ahead of their typical on-campus interviews, has been first reported by Law.com.
These changes are influenced by the increasingly earlier start of the recruiting process. Both Yale and Stanford were hesitant about the availability of spots by late July and early August. Standford Law School (SLS) highlighted that moving their On-Campus Interviews (OCI) forward instead of releasing their students into the market early would coordinate applications and screening interviews in a streamlined and efficient process. It would also reduce the disruption to summer programs.
“We strongly believe that moving OCI earlier will be less burdensome on our students than a recruiting process that includes both OCI and direct applications and stretches from June through the end of August,” SLS disclosed in their announcement. They emphasized the importance of students being able to concentrate on their finals and minimize as much as possible the impact of the 2L job search on their 1L summer job, which for most students, is their first legal experience.
Kelly Voight, Yale’s assistant dean for the Career Development Office, commented that the school had avoided this transition to June as much as they could. However, the decision was eventually made this year to maximise students’ access to opportunities and allow for informed decision-making. The elite school may adjust its interview programming in the future, depending on law firms’ hiring practices.
While this strategy may significantly benefit Yale and Stanford students, the implications for students at other top law schools remain uncertain. Could the formalization of these virtual interviews start a competitive race among law schools for jobs at top law firms? Will other top law schools imitate Yale and Stanford’s move? It seems we’ll have to wait to find out.
