In the 2024 Indonesian presidential elections, presidential frontrunner and current Minister of Defence Prabowo Subianto has claimed victory after preliminary vote counts showed him with a commanding lead. Hailing from a military background, Subianto has made several earlier attempts at the presidency but claims early victory this time despite losing in the 2014 and 2018 elections. With preliminary counts citing 57 percent of the votes to his name, it appears needless for a second round of votes against his opponents.
In a rallying speech to his supporters, Subianto not only shared his triumph but also promised to be a president for all Indonesians of different ethnicities, religions, and societal backgrounds. The possible win marks the close of a nearly three-decade-long quest for power for the affluent candidate.
The opposition has shown dissimilar reactions to the preliminary results. Third place opposition candidate Ganjar Pranowo has appealed for patience from supporters, citing possibilities of voter fraud. Concurrently, Anies Baswedan, the second place candidate, emphasized the importance of counting all votes and vigilance against election fraud, albeit without passing any immediate comments on the rapid count results.
Subianto, also notorious for being the son-in-law of historical military dictator Suharto, has a somewhat controversial past. Disturbing accusations of human rights abuses shadow his military career, leading to an dishonorable discharge from the military. Despite these, he has never been convicted and has most controversially attained the tacit support of the incumbent Joko Widodo after recent court decisions seemingly cleared the way for Jokowi’s son to be Subianto’s vice-presidential running mate.
