Canada, Australia, and New Zealand Warn Israel Over Potential Gaza Strip Offensive

In a significant development, the political leaders of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have issued a
warning to Israel concerning its reported plans for a military offensive in Rafah, Gaza Strip.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, together with the heads of Australia and New Zealand, delivered a joint statement expressing grave concern over indications of Israel’s intent to launch a ground offensive into a densely populated area within the Gaza Strip.

The three leaders emphasized the potential catastrophe such action could precipitate, stressing their concern for the estimated 1.5 million Palestinians, including their respective citizens and their families, seeking shelter in the region. Already grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, the situation in Gaza could spiral towards further devastation if military operations escalate.

Further in the joint statement, the leaders draw attention to recent interim orders issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). These orders call on Israel to safeguard civilians and ensure the provision of essential humanitarian aid. Reiterating their countries’ commitment to a two-state solution, they emphasized the importance of a negotiated political settlement to establish long-term peace and security.

Trudeau’s joint statement emerges in the aftermath of a report from the Maple. This report alleges that Canada authorized $28.5 million in new military exports to Israel since the October 7 attacks. It implies that such authorization could be in violation of Canada’s own domestic arms control laws and international trade law, as both prohibit sale of arms to nations likely to use them in human rights violations.

In a recent parliamentary session, Trudeau faced public rebuke for his perceived complicity, with calls for his government to halt arms supply to Israel.

In another controversial move, Trudeau has been criticized for terminating aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) – a lifeline for Palestinian refugees. His decision follows accusations from Israeli officials that a dozen UNRWA employees were affiliated with Hamas and that Israel has found terror tunnels under the offices of UNRWA.
