A New York lawyer has been sentenced to 78 months, or six-and-a-half years, in prison for orchestrating an $18.8 million Ponzi scheme. The lawyer, Robert Wisnicki, founded the Queens-based law firms Wisnicki & Associates LLP and Wisnicki Neuhauser LLP. Additionally, Wisnicki will face three years of supervised release following his time in prison.
Wisnicki admitted to money laundering and operating this Ponzi scheme, which involved stealing from his clients under the guise of investments. He was indicted in January 2022 alongside seven others, pleaded guilty within the same year, and was subsequently sentenced in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
This sentence includes 36 months for a money laundering count and an additional 42 months for a wire fraud count. This case serves as a reminder that legal professionals carry a responsibility to uphold justice, rather than exploit their own clients.
