In a recent U.S. legal case, Baker McKenzie’s verein structure has seen increased scrutiny as the law firm faces accusations of malpractice. Baker McKenzie’s efforts to have the case transferred to U.K. or Russia did not convince the court.
The lawsuit involves former client Lehram Capital, a U.K. investment business, and co-plaintiff Daniel Rodriguez. In 2018, both Lehram Capital and Rodriguez accused Baker McKenzie’s former Russian office of incorrectly filing a claim in the “wrong court in Russia,” and for allegedly introducing Rodriguez to a Russian criminal group. They claim that this put the plaintiffs and their families in significant danger.
Despite the allegations, the firm has argued that the case ‘has no merit’, accusing its former client of ‘forum shopping’. The firm views the lawsuit as an ‘affront’ to certain legal doctrines.
