Ukraine’s Security Services, in cooperation with prosecutors in the Donetsk region, initiated a war crimes investigation into allegations that Russian troops executed six unarmed Ukrainian soldiers in the city of Avdiivka amidst recent intense combat (Donetsk oblast prosecutor’s office). Proof, including video footage showing the execution of two Ukrainian soldiers while in Russian detention, has been circulated on social media.
State-run news agency Ukrinform echoed the Ukrainian authorities’ announcement, providing further details on the investigation’s nature, confirming the slated charges to be levied under Part 2 of Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which deals with war crimes combined with premeditated murder.
The Ukrainian military spokesperson Dmytro Lykhoviy, has been quoted by Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne (source), stating that this is not a solitary occurrence of Russia’s infringement of war norms. “The killing of POWs is a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions and can be classified as a grave international crime”, said Lykhoviy.
During recent hostilities, the city of Avdiivka was seized by Russian forces, Russian state media reported. From the onset of its aggression in Ukraine, Russia has been continually accused of violating international law. The consequences of such actions have been amplified by growing internal pressure on Russian leadership due to a clampdown on democratic dissent, thereby magnifying the extent and intensity of Russia’s aggressive behavior in Ukraine.
The passing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny while in detention triggered sizable protests within Russia and widespread international criticism. This recent wave of civil unrest adds another layer of internal pressure to a country already under international scrutiny.
