UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron announced on Wednesday that sanctions are to be imposed on the senior officials of the prison where Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was detained and later died. These sanctions on six individuals will entail a ban from entering the UK and asset freezes, marking the UK as the first country to impose sanctions following Navalny’s death. The detailed sanctions were announced on the UK government’s official site.
This move by the UK government will hinder the named individuals from entering, departing, or residing in the UK and will also impose a complete freeze on any funds or economic resources they hold in the UK. The UK government has also called for the immediate return of Navalny’s body to his kin, along with a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. A spokesperson from Navalny’s family has claimed his death to be a murder and accuses authorities of withholding his body to conceal the cause of death.
Alexei Navalny had been a prominent opposition figure in Russia and a chief critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Serving a three-year sentence at a penal colony in the Arctic Circle, his family confirmed that he died on February 16 following a significant decline in his health. His imprisonment had been marked by harsh conditions, including repeated periods of solitary confinement and exposure to extremely cold temperatures.
The six sanctioned individuals held senior roles at the prison, including Vadim Konstantinovich Kalinin, who managed the operations of the colony. These sanctions have been imposed under the UK’s Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations due to the prison officials’ role in perpetrating activities that violate multiple human rights, including the right not to be subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, as well as the right to life.
Prior to his imprisonment, Navalny, a legal professional, devoted himself to uncovering corruption within the Russian government. Navalny’s YouTube investigations garnered a global audience and amassed hundreds of millions of online views. In response to Navalny’s death, rallies have taken place across Russia in his honour. However, these gatherings led to the detention of over 400 individuals by the police last weekend.
