The Office of General Counsel (OGC) at the University of North Texas, an institution with a significant student population of 47,000, is currently under scrutiny by the faculty for its interpretation of the state’s anti-diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) law. According to the OGC, the upcoming Pride Week activities, a staple of the University’s annual events, would be in violation of this recently enacted law. This guidance has led the University to discontinue the celebration.
The decision was met with disapproval at a recent Faculty Senate meeting held on February 14, sparking intense debate among faculty members. One of the teachers even suggested the possibility of a vote of no confidence against the OGC, reflecting the level of dissatisfaction amongst the faculty as reported by the North Texas Daily, the student newspaper.
