The eldest son of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the governing party’s presidential candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum, have reportedly received threats and insults after their phone numbers were publicly disclosed. José Ramón López Beltrán, President Obrador’s son, addressed the issue on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the invasion of privacy and potential threats to his family’s security. He went into detail about the incident that began with a letter containing threats addressed to the president and his children. Furthermore, he questioned the reasons behind the disclosure of his phone number, while expressing bewilderment at his unasked-for involvement in the situation.
Beltrán also lamented the continuous disruption of his privacy, attributing this to harassment through drones, cameras, and unknown individuals showing up at his residence. He shared his thoughts via a post on X.
Presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum, along with the party’s secretary-general, Citlalli Hernández, echoed López Beltrán’s concerns. They confirmed that their phone numbers had likewise been exposed, leading to a barrage of offensive messages and telephone calls. Both Sheinbaum and Hernandez addressed the issue through their respective posts, found here and here.
In a related development, last Friday, President Obrador defended his decision to disclose a New York Times reporter’s phone number at a press conference. This action was a response to an article by the NYT accusing Obrador of accepting campaign donations from the Sinaloa drug cartel in 2006. However, the US Department of Justice provided clarification that President Obrador was not currently under investigation.
