For the eighth consecutive year, women have outnumbered their male colleagues in law school enrollment. This apparent uptick in female representation, however, has seemingly riled up a certain individual who has chosen to voice his displeasure through a series of cryptic text messages to female law professors. The FBI is now running an investigation into the matter.
The anonymous texts began being sent on January 30th, with another group sent this past weekend. A ripple of agitation spread through the academic sphere when Professor Victoria Haneman of Creighton University School of Law posted a screenshot of the strange messages she received. A series of these identical messages was also dispatched to numerous other female law professors across at least three law schools.
However, it wasn’t only law professors who were targeted. Undergraduate women professors also reported receiving the same messages. As reported by Law.com, one to two law professors from eight law schools and an additional six professors from a ninth institution—all women—said they received the messages. In addition to these women, a female law student and four undergraduate professors also reported receiving the text.
While the texts were not overtly threatening, they carried a distinct touch of eeriness that has left the recipients unsettled. The author of these mysterious text messages remains unknown. However, it is hoped that the ongoing FBI investigation will soon identify the sender.
