Ghana Enacts Legislation Imposing Harsh Penalties on LGBTQ+ Community and Supporters

The Parliament of Ghana has passed legislation that criminalizes identifying as LGBTQ+. The law, known as
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, stipulates that anyone in the country found to be LGBTQ+ could face imprisonment.

The new law was passed unanimously following a third reading in Parliament. Under the enacted regulation, people identifying as LGBTQ+ may receive a sentence of up to three years in prison, while those who establish or finance LGBTQ+ groups could face up to five years in prison.
