The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in legal industry has raised important questions. Many of these queries were comprehensively discussed in this year’s LegalWeek “Future State of the Industry” panel. The central question appears to be: Why should law firms adopt AI?
There are several valid incentives, including competition, potential cost-saving, the opportunity to improve certain legal procedures, the chance to impress clients, and the appeal to prospective expert hires. However, the panel made it clear that firms should not be integrating AI for its own sake. The technology is a unique tool, and for many in the sector, it’s still largely uncharted territory, similar to the advent of desktop computers in the late 80s and early 90s.
An analysis by ALM’s Pacesetter Research highlighted that legal innovation should always aim to solve problems and make a significant difference for clients, rather than being innovation for the sake of it. The firm believes that embracing innovation without a clear objective is not only pointless but can also hinder progress.
These considerably thought-provoking ideas suggest that as law firms consider embracing AI technologies, they must prioritize the needs and improve the experience of their clients, rather than simply chasing the allure of new technology.
